The top things to do in Pampatar are visiting San Carlos de Borromeo Castle and the Church of Cristo del Buen Viaje, strolling the old town with its colonial houses, watching the sunset at Punta Ballena lighthouse over the salt flats, and swimming in a calm bay with beaches minutes away. Pampatar is one of the oldest towns in Venezuela and the nicest place to stay on Margarita Island: it has history, beaches and good restaurants, and it is 15 minutes from Porlamar.
We live this area every day, because our apartment is right here, facing the sea. This is the guide we give our guests to see Pampatar in a day.
A little history
Pampatar was founded in the 16th century beside Margarita's best natural harbour, a deep, sheltered bay. For centuries it was the island's main port, and it was attacked again and again by pirates and privateers. The forts you see today were built to defend it. During Venezuela's war of independence, Pampatar and Margarita saw major battles, and that story is told inside the castle.
1. San Carlos de Borromeo Castle

This is Pampatar's landmark, right in the centre and facing the bay. It was built between 1664 and 1684, after Dutch pirates destroyed the earlier fortress in 1662. It has a square layout on a star-shaped base, thick stone walls, four corner watchtowers and a battery of cannons aimed at the sea.
In 1816 Luisa Cáceres de Arismendi, one of the heroines of Venezuelan independence, was held here before being moved to the mainland. The castle was restored in the 1960s and is now a museum with independence-era paintings, old weapons and memorabilia of Luisa Cáceres.
- Don't miss: walking the walls and looking out over the bay from the watchtowers.
- Entry: usually free. Guided tours depend on whether a guide is available that day.
- Tip: go early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the sun is gentler.
2. Church of Cristo del Buen Viaje

A short walk from the castle stands the town church, with its white façade and bell tower. Inside is the Cristo del Buen Viaje ("Christ of the Safe Journey"), much loved by local fishermen and sailors. According to local tradition, the figure arrived on a ship that could not set sail again until it was left in Pampatar.
On Sundays, a craft market sets up next to the church, with bracelets, home décor, images of the Virgen del Valle and local art. Mornings are busiest.
3. The old town and Calle Joaquín Maneiro
Wander the streets of the centre, especially Calle Joaquín Maneiro, lined with colourful traditional houses, wooden windows, art and décor shops. Near the waterfront you'll also see the old Customs House, a colonial building from the days when Pampatar was the island's trading port.
It is the best place to buy a souvenir made in Margarita and to take photos in the late afternoon light.
4. The bay and the waterfront
Pampatar bay is calm, with fishing boats moored in front of the castle. Early in the morning you'll see fishermen bringing in the day's catch, and at sunset the waterfront fills with people out for a walk. Because the bay faces east, it is also one of the best spots on the island to watch the sunrise.
5. La Caranta Fort
On the hill across the bay lie the ruins of La Caranta Fort, which crossed fire with the castle to protect the harbour. Pirates destroyed it in the 17th century. From the top there is a beautiful view over Pampatar.
6. Punta Ballena lighthouse and the salt flats
Punta Ballena lighthouse, opened in 2007, stands on a lookout over the sea with wide views of the Caribbean, and it is a favourite sunset spot. From there you can also see the Pampatar salt flats, salt lagoons that change colour through the day, from copper to pink to earthy tones.
7. The beaches of Pampatar

There are several calm beaches a few minutes away by car:
- Pampatar beach: in front of the old town, with a fishing-village feel.
- Playa Varadero: about 2 km away, with shades, loungers and bars nearby. Quieter on weekdays.
- Playa El Ángel: about 2 km away, with clear, calm water. Busy at weekends.
- Playa Concorde (El Morro): between Pampatar and Porlamar, good for a seafood lunch with your feet in the sand.
The Downtownbeach beach club, with a pool, restaurant and loungers, is right across from the apartment. To explore the island's bigger beaches, see our guide to the best beaches on Margarita Island.
Where to eat in Pampatar
Pampatar is one of the best areas on the island to eat. Along the waterfront and around the castle there are fish and seafood restaurants facing the sea, and along the main avenues you'll find everything from Venezuelan cooking to international restaurants. Order the fried fish of the day with tostones (fried green plantain), pastel de chucho (a stingray and plantain bake that is Margarita's signature dish) or empanadas de cazón (small-shark empanadas).
Shopping and afternoon plans
Pampatar is also home to one of the island's biggest shopping malls, handy on a rainy day or for groceries. Margarita is a free port, so some imported goods are cheaper than in the rest of Venezuela.
